The journey of life
Lily Tomlin, born Mary Jean Tomlin, was born in Detroit, Michigan, to parents Guy and Lillie Mae Tomlin. Just before their daughter was born, the Tomlin family traveled from Kentucky to Michigan. Tomlin has one sibling, a younger brother named Richard.
As a child, Tomlin praised groundbreaking female comedians including Lucille Ball, Bea Lilly, Imogen Coca and Jean Carroll. After graduating high school, she did not pursue a direct acting career, but entered Wayne State University to study medicine. While at Wayne State, she took a dramatic arts program, which prompted her to leave college and start working at a local coffee shop.
In 1965, she traveled to New York City and began working in clubs including Improv, Cafe Au Go Go, Upstairs Downstairs and Downstairs Room, and began working for legendary singer Mabel Mercer.
In August 2013, it was announced that Tomlin and Wagner might marry after 42 years of living together, shortly after the introduction of federal laws supporting same-sex marriage that made the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and overturned Proposition 8.
On New Year’s Eve 2014, Tomlin, 74, and Wagner, 78, officially announced their marriage in a private wedding in Los Angeles, California.
Tomlin performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in January 2019, announcing that she had been offered an offer to “come out” on the cover of Time magazine in 1975, but ultimately declined. “I just came to the conclusion that I’m not going to play them,” Tomlin described. “I need to be known for my performance.”
